La Famille came recommended by some vegetarian foodie friends who had just visited Marrakech. They did not have the chance to eat here but instructed me to try it and report back. A bit hard to find, a small door off a worn path. After I walked by twice a local pointed me to the entryway.
Upon walking in I was taken back by how un-Moroccan this joint was. Bright, airy, open kitchen, trees everywhere, curated gift shop, if I didn’t know any better I would have thought I was on Abbot Kinney! Suggested to make a reservation, but the owner snuck my party of 1 in right before the lunch rush.
The grub is simple, vegetarian and organic! The choices- limited, which was perfect after 3 weeks of traveling. Seeing salad on the menu was fantastic, not common at traditional Moroccan restaurants. I ordered the salad and pizza combo.
My dishes were fresh, creative and light. Pizza with a spin, house-made flatbread topped with guacamole cream, candied lemon, dried apricot and mint. Wonderful. A swarm of mint adorned my salad as well, I get so tickled when bold ingredients are used with real gusto and passion!
Inspired by these minty-mouthfulls I promised myself I would use this herb more generously at home. When I taste food abroad, I take notes during memorable meals about what inspired me. This way I can bring the taste, a technique, or both home with me.
If you are traveling to Marrakesh and want a break from tagine and couscous, visit La Famille. A quaint spot, gorgeous scenery and lovely meal. Read what others are saying here.
